Success on the water

The SSSI regatta was another outstanding success for OBHS rowers, despite some challenging rowing conditions on both Saturday and Sunday.

With a field of 1122 competitors from across the South Island, the OBHS rowers did incredibly well to get into 17 'A' finals and 6 'B' finals with six crews gaining a top three position.

Gold
U18 coxed novice four - Seth Affleck (stroke), Toby Ollerenshaw, Ollie Scott, Jude Smillie and Hunter Ruxton (cox).

Bronze
U18 double skulls - Jed Tisdall (stroke), Tom Dunn.
U17 double skulls - Harrison Thode (stroke), and Roland Ozanne.

Silver
U16 single skulls - Harrison Thode
U 18 novice coxed eight - Seth Affleck (stroke), Carlos Dean, Toby Ollerenshaw, Hoani Kiwara, Ben Glover, Logan Millar, Ollie Scott, Jude Smillie and Hunter Ruxton (cox).

This is the second time that Logan has replaced a sick/injured rower, he is an incredible asset to the squad. U17 coxed quad skulls Eddie Burgess (stroke), Jack Scott, Roland Ozanne, Harrison Thode and Noah Clarke (cox). Although definitely second, the result is under review.

Other crews were very close to the top three, including:

U16 coxed quad skulls (4th in A final) - Jack West (stroke), Ben Thompson, Liko Edwards, Toby McClean and Angus Perkins (cox) .

The U15 coxed octuple were so unlucky to have an oar break when they were roaring to the finish. They came 5th in the A final - Tom Collie (stroke), Leo Garden, Ollie Scott, Logan Millar, Jack MacAskill, Jude Smillie, Cru Holland, George West and Hunter Ruxton (cox).

All the boys did OBHS proud with their conduct on and off the water and they also looked the part wearing their new rowing kit which thankfully arrived prior to the last regatta of the season.

Rowing for some of the boys has now ended for the season, we congratulate them on their dedication to the sport. It is not a small ask to be turfed out of bed and be on the water at 5.30am. All of them have improved enormously and we hope to see them back next year.

For a smaller squad, a long training weekend this coming weekend will aim to get the boys to peak performance before the Aon Maadi Regatta, held in Twizel between the 18-24 March.
