A great experience!
The OBHS tennis team travelled to Christchurch last Sunday to compete against Christ's College in the 2024 Summer Interschool.
OBHS can be proud of the fight our lads showed in their matches and the graciousness they showed off the courts as they represented us. Our team consisted of Bilal Ahmad (Yr 9), Hugo Barsby (Yr 13), Hugo Buitenhek (Yr 11), Angus Collie (Yr 9), Riley Horne (Yr 10), Alex La Hood (Yr 13), Max MacLachlan (captain - Yr 13) and Fergus Oberlin-Brown (Yr 13).
The competition format consisted of 24 matches. 16 singles matches and 8 double matches over two days of play.
Christ’s are clearly one of the most talented tennis schools in the country and will fancy their chances at the upcoming national tournament. In fact, they held the advantage of significantly higher rankings in almost every match of the draw. We also had three juniors representing Otago Boys’ against older opponents. This makes singles wins from Bilal and Fergus, and a doubles win from Hugo Barsby and Angus all the more impressive. Further to that, the mental fortitude, persistence, and resilience that our lads showed to fight for every point was outstanding.
But more importantly, our lads showed pride in the way they carried themselves on and off the court. This, along with their sportsmanship, made me proud to be associated with them over the three days.
Christ’s took the overall win 21-3.
Well done lads.
