Our Year 11 Science students responded to an invitation to visit the microbiology laboratories at the University of Otago with enthusiasm. They spent a morning exploring the features of microorganisms, their uses in food, decomposition and their role as pathogens.
The students were delighted to find out that the postgraduate student tutor was old boy Borom Blakie, now completing a PhD in microbiology.
Borom was able to show the students his masters thesis and some excellent examples of research into microorganisms as well as fascinating electron micrographs of really small things.
