Biz4Taiohi - Inspiring Māori Student Futures

On Wednesday 6th July, four Year 12 &13 students Dan Ryan, Ricky Jackson, Mitchell Mahoni-Rae and Isi Tuivaga were lucky enough to be invited by the Otago University Maori Studies Department in conjunction with the Otago University Business School to take part in the annual ‘Biz4Taiohi’ course which is focussed at Maori students.

Four Maori students from each Dunedin school interested in a career in commerce at Otago University were invited. The day started with the students performing their mihi to the group introducing themselves and their iwi. Inspired by Maori language week, students were asked to include their knowledge of the Maori language into their work throughout the day. 

After an introduction and presentation of University degrees and career opportunities in the commerce sector, students were split up and asked to partake in short taster activities. The activities included three sections: marketing, information science and management. All included an in depth insight into possible career opportunities post studies and what’s involved within the degree by putting the students through their paces and engaging them in practical activities associated with the subject. 

The activities were followed by a well earned lunch and gave an opportunity for all the students from different schools in Dunedin to interact with not only each other but also the Otago University staff.

Overall it was a great day and the OBHS contingent were privileged and thankful to be a part of it.
