This adventure education trip was an awesome opportunity for many of the students to step outside of their comfort zone and embrace the snow in and around Wanaka.
The first day was a recreational Ski or Snowboard day for the students to find their feet and gain some experience in the snow before attempting cross‐country skiing the following three days.
Once we had completed the day at Cadrona Ski Field we tackled the Snow Farm to try our hand at cross‐country skiing out to Bob Lee Hut, this was a 7km trek that brought a lot of fun and excitement. When we reached Bob Lee Hut the focus was to build snow caves or snow igloos to sleep in for the two nights with full stomachs from great teamwork in the kitchen. With a total of 5 caves built that could house all students and staff, many braved the cold, windy and snowy conditions for an unforgettable experience.
The final day came quickly and we made our way back to the snow farm carpark to regroup and make our way back to Dunedin.
All in all this was a great experience for everyone involved and we are looking forward to more application of outdoor education.
