Four senior pupils competed in the New Zealand Track and Field Championships in Hamilton from 17-19 March with great success. They enjoyed competing beside some of New Zealand’s best athletes - Eliza McCartney, Tom Walsh and Joseph Millar.
Anton Schroder convincingly won the Men’s Under 20
Javelin Gold Medal with a throw of 54.74. He then stepped up to the senior men’s
grade in the Javelin and competed beside some highly esteemed company,
including Olympian Stuart Farquhar. Anton’s throw of 50.95m achieved 5th
place in this event, an awesome feat.
In the Men’s Under 20 800m, Liam Turner ran with great determination through pain with an injured foot to gain the Bronze Medal in a very quick race, with a personal best of well over a second, of 1.54.59.
Cameron Miller competed in the Men’s Under 18 grade in four individual events. He gained the Bronze Medal in the Long jump with a leap of 6.59m, and narrowly missed medalling in the High Jump on countback. He was also 6th in the 400m and 7th in the Discus. Cameron also joined old boy, Matthew Ogle in the Otago Men’s Under 20 4 x 400m relay team to win the Gold Medal in a very convincing manner, over 6 seconds faster than the next team, setting an Otago Record for Men’s 18 years, Men’s 19 years and Men’s 20 years.
Nathan Hill competed in the Men’s Under 18 1500m, and achieved a very significant personal best, taking nearly 5 seconds of his record time at the Otago Secondary Schools Champs to break the 4 minute barrier with a time of 3.59.44. Nathan was placed 5th in this event.
