The Last Word

Lads, to start things off, I have something I want to ask you. Have you ever experienced that feeling of not being able to remember the dream you just had the night before? I know I have for sure and what I’ve realised is that this weird sensation has occurred more and more as I’ve grown older. Now why might this be? Is it because we’re too busy with our everyday lives? Well I guess you could kind of say it is.

Everyday, we’re so busy working hard to try to meet society’s expectations of us. So hard in fact, that some of us have ultimately stopped working towards our own big dreams and instead started working towards fitting into this box that we think society approves of. Our severe lack in ability to remember our dreams just highlights the lack of impact that our dreams actually have on our life. Remember being a kid and dreaming of being something crazy, like an astronaut without even caring about what other people thought? You’d drift off to sleep and be transported to a whole new world, a world where anything is possible. Well, what’s happened to that dreamy quality we once had in us?

Amidst our journey from childhood to manhood, we’ve somehow lost our ability to dream big, our feet are now planted in “reality” where those big dreams we once had are now just considered flat out unrealistic. What we believe to be the restricting expectations of society have lead us onto a linear path that has the same end goal for everyone. So a solution for this? Be different. No, let me rephrase that. Be yourself. Don’t worry about what other people think about you. Start to dream big again, get off that linear path and travel a new road. A road that you’re passionate about and leads to you living your life to the fullest! At times you might feel like your passion isn’t worthy of pursuing because of the way society has framed the ideal lifestyle. But the thing is, these “acceptable” standards for what careers people should pursue have formed because people simply like to do things the easy way. But that doesn’t mean you have to. It’s not going to be easy to deviate from the main path, it’ll prove to be quite bumpy but if you’re truly willing to travel this path and give it your all, persevere, it will definitely be worth it.

So I guess the challenge I set to all of you is to relight that fire you once had in you, the fire that drove you to dream big and aspire to do great things. The world is full of a variety of opportunities which have unique paths of their own so take a small leap of faith and do what you’re passionate about. I guarantee you, when you’re on a path that you want to travel, you will be far more motivated and that motivation will have a massive positive impact in all other areas of your life. So get out there, overcome your fear of being different and dream big. It won’t be an easy journey, but just keep reminding yourself why you’re doing what you’re doing. Have some grit and take that first step towards pursuing your passion.

Thank you
