This Week In The Library

It was interesting to read the latest research by the NZ Book Council on national book reading trends and habits released this week.

You can read more about this and view the actual report at http://www.bookcouncil.org.nz/programmes/research/.

They discovered that we devour on average 20.6 books each per year, which is pretty impressive. There are a number of students here at OB's who would read this much every 2-3 weeks. However, many people do not read at all and lots of us struggle to find time to do this, even though we really want too. Our book loan statistics have gone up each year, and we work hard to get great books into the hands of our students, however, I've noticed the reading drop off as students get more tied down with school work for NCEA.

The benefits of reading are well known, from increasing your vocabulary, developing empathy, improving concentration and so on. It's not easy, but it is worth while and it can be done. 15 minutes a night in bed before they turn out the light soon gets the book read, or sit and read to them, neither of you are ever too old!
