On Wednesday the OBHS 2nd XI Football team faced the mighty Kaikorai Valley College 1st XI in the 3rd division boys final.
Twelve weeks of competition had led us to this moment and we were not about to take it lightly.
Crippled by the absence of key players Felix Brabant, Dylan Fisher and Nik Kalmakoff, the team was already up against the odds. Regardless of this, we took to the pitch confidently. However, we were soon brought back down to earth by a quick goal from KVC. Minutes later, we were back in it thanks to the pace and strength of striker Jay Lee, who coolly slotted the ball past the opposition goalie for 1-1.
The first half came to an end and after some wise words from coach/sage Dr Fisher we returned to the field.
Almost instantly, OB’s pounced; George Alexander capitalising on a defensive error to head us into the lead. Fifteen minutes of end to end football followed and unfortunately KVC managed to equalise through a freak long range effort that goalkeeper Josué Munro was unfortunate not to keep out.
With 10 minutes to go, Lawrence Brett with an unbelievable clutch, hammered home to put OB’s 3-2 ahead. Some desperate defending by Hank Niemi and Johnny Walkinshaw and an unbelievable save by Josué Munro, kept us ahead for the rest of the match and we emerged victorious.
Magic moment goes to Nick “Captain” Kirk for shouting 3 cheers for Kavanagh after the match.
Final score: OBHS 3 - KVC 2
