Otago Boys' High School were well represented at last weekends South Island Secondary Schools' Triathlon and Duathlon Championships.
Injury and illness precluded James Howard and Shea Darwen from competing, and Louis Harris and Nathan Hill's other sporting commitments meant we couldn't field our senior boys team again either. Despite this, we still had eight boys participating.
Early fog lifted to a clear hot day which made for some fast racing. The junior athletes were first away and managed to avoid the dramas on the bike section to post some excellent results. The junior Blue team (Connor Feist, Ben Tucker and George Hamilton) won the team event, with our White team (Eddie Wright, James Gardner, Rohan Lackie-Zaharic) finishing a close third. Cole Gibbons, racing in the Under 14 duathlon, came second in this category.
In the seniors, recently-named NZ representative, Jack Divers placed third in the Under 19 boys category. He did particularly well given he had been off school, ill. He held close to the winner until the closing kilometres. The two who finished above him podiumed at the Challenge Schools event last month so plenty of positives to be taken from the result as he looks towards nationals at the end of the month.
