With several students away with tournament week, Matt MacDonald was the sole representative at this year’s Otago/Southland Secondary Schools’ Road Cycling Championships.
Conditions were pretty average in Invercargill on the back of the weather bomb that had hit the west coast of the South Island hours earlier. It was cold, windy and wet, and while the sun did come out later for the road race, it was far from the conditions riders have enjoyed in recent months.
First event up was the Individual Time Trial, where Matt finished 3rd. In the Road Race he placed 2nd. This was enough to claim 2nd overall in the Under-17 Boys category. Matt has made significant improvements through the start of this year and is deserving of his result. Matt is also currently leading the Cat 3 section at Cycling Otago’s Monday Night Racing series.
Thanks to Ellie MacDonald and Cycling Otago Youth Development for their support of Matt in his racing.
