Surfing is popular at Otago Boys'. Our team compete at the weekly secondary school surf ladder competition at St Clair every week in the summer.
A committed group of hostel boys are on the water in the morning before school in summer and in the evenings during winter. Their goal was to do something new - represent OBHS at the Secondary School Surfing Nationals held annually at Raglan.
A group of three Year 12 students, James Watt, Tarquin Gordon and Harrison Ryan and Year 9 student Jake Owen headed north last weekend with coach Isaac Davies, parents, Jackie Hughes and Andrew and Karen Gordon. They headed into one of the worst storms seen in 20 years on the East coast with swells of over 12 metres. The competition continued and to be fair, our lads are pretty keen big water surfers, cutting their teeth in the cold southern waves of the South Coast, they were likely better prepared than most.
James and Jake surfed in the second round of their categories and did us proud. A great start to an annual trek to Raglan by our OBHS surfers!!
