Over the past week the NZ National Rowing Championships have been held at Lake Karapiro in Cambridge. Otago Boys' High School had 2 rowers representing us at the event.
Reuben Cook, our 2020 Club Captain for Rowing, competed in a Club Coxless Quadruple Sculls event (teaming up with 3 Dunstan High School boys for a composite crew) and finished 6th in the A final. Reuben also competed in the Mens Club Singles Sculls event and out of 38 entries (mostly adult rowers) he finished 4th, missing out on a bronze medal by under a second. This is a very promising result heading into the final block of training ahead of the South Island Secondary School Rowing Championships at Lake Ruataniwha in 3 weeks.
Ben Mason, who was a year 13 rower last year for OBHS, is now competing for the Southern Regional Rowing Performance Centre and races in an OBHS rowsuit. Ben had a superb regatta, gaining gold in the Mens Under 20 Coxless Double Sculls and 2 silver medals in the Mens Under 22 Coxless quad and Mens Under 20 Single Sculls event. He now returns to Dunedin where he will decide whether to trial again for a NZ Representative team.
The current OBHS rowing team have been training very hard over the past 2 months to build their fitness and boat speed, and the coaching team are pleased with their results and progress. Crews are being finalised to represent OBHS at both the SISS Regatta and the Aon Maadi Cup later in March.
The team will be sitting their last 2km erg test next Monday after school which will count towards selection. We invite any staff or students to come and witness this extreme test of speed and fitness. Monday 2nd March 3.20pm on Littlebourne by the cricket nets.
