Sport makes a long awaited return to the hostel.

With the Highlanders and some pre-season games of rugby, we had big numbers in for the weekend. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the Highlanders game. It was just so great to have the freedom to go and watch without any Covid restrictions. The exciting finish made for a very noisy bus trip back to the hostel! The 1st XV had a game against Kaikorai Colts at Bishopscourt. In some ways it felt like a hostel benefit game, with large numbers of hostel boys watching and playing as well as numerous hostel parents (past and present) on the sideline.

The hostel shooting team had their first meet on Sunday in extremely cold conditions! All the boys competed in the three different DTL (down the line) events, and some did skeet shooting as well. From these different events we got some good results, especially from the juniors. After shoot offs, the following boys won medals:

2nd overall in Junior Division - Nicholas Sim

3rd in Junior Skeet - George Scurr

Well done George and Nicholas!

We have nearly 100 parents booked in for the parents function on the 2nd July. This is fantastic number and it promises be a great night.

Sunday activities resume next week with an easy one to start off, Moana Pool for a slide and swim. The following Sunday will see the boys try their hand at indoor rock climbing.

We have only been back for a few weeks, but the school holidays are rapidly approaching, with only three more weeks left in the term. In the holidays we are taking the international students on a tour of the lower South Island. Places to be visited include Te Anau, Milford Sound, Queenstown, Wanaka, Mt Cook and Christchurch. The boys are really looking forward to getting out and about to explore the country after being stuck at the hostel for the best part of seven weeks over lockdown.

As always, we have some key events coming up next term. The first weekend is a compulsory in-weekend. With the boys having missed so much time from the hostel it becomes an important weekend. We have Mitchell Cup basketball and rowing and well as team building type activities planned to keep the boys busy.

Grandparents dinner has been re-scheduled to the 9th August. An invite will be sent out for this next month. Grandparents dinner has quickly become a very special event in the life of the hostel, and I would encourage all grandparents to come along.

Have a great week.
