Dunedin Schools’ Debating Back Underway

Otago Boys’ gained two good results on Wednesday night as both OBHS 1 and OBHS 2 picked up wins as the Dunedin Schools’ Debating competition restarted after a long hiatus.

With both sides pitted on the negative side of the moot This house would televise major criminal trials, strong debates were built centred around the lack of a fair trial and the attention it gives alleged offenders. Both teams debated well and thoroughly deserved their wins at the end of the day.

OBHS 1 took on Kavanagh College and took away a convincing win. Liam Connolly was best speaker for the debate with Luke Geddes and Boudewijn Keenan also in the top 3 speakers for the debate. After a strong Aotearoa Online Schools Debating campaign, it was good to be back and competing at the local level!

OBHS 2 were up against Logan Park and whilst it was a tighter debate, OBHS 2 got over the line. Michael Crosson performed very well and was awarded best speaker whilst Matthew Visser and Lachlan Williams also performed admirably.

After a long break from debating in person, all the boys thoroughly enjoyed being back. Hopefully competition will be able to continue on into the future, albeit with stricter hygiene methods under our new normal!
