Last week Max Gray, one of our Year 13 students spoke to boys at House Assembly about an issue he had spotted in the bush surrounding the school.
Max had become aware of a large amount of rubbish that had been illegally dumped there. Many a person had no doubt spotted this rubbish too, given that it is a commonly used thoroughfare. Max, who has a strong sense of civic duty and a passion for environmental issues, didn't just walk on by!
Max displayed great leadership in this area, speaking to boys about his environmental concerns and enlisting a top-notch McIndoe crew to help with the clean up of this rubbish! The boys filled 3 full bags that were dumped by someone who clearly didn't embrace the same values that the boys at OBHS do. The Value of Respect for our local environment and the flora and fauna that inhabit it, the value of Honour - honouring the beautiful area that surrounds the school and our local community's right to use it without it being defiled in this manner.
Embracing these values are what sets boys at OBHS apart. Max Gray and his team are clearly future leaders in this field and should be commended for putting their hands up to help out when it really matters. Volunteering to engage in community service such as this is something that makes life better for all Dunedinites. All of these boys have been honoured with a McIndoe House Phoenix award from the House Leader and with a Service Award from the Rector in assembly.
Congratulations and thank you to:
Max Gray, Angus Workman, Freddie Ashdown, Lucas Power, Kasun Silva, Levi Chettleburgh, Hadi Obaidullah and Nicholas Wright.
