In 1994, Wayne Patrick was the dux of OBHS. He studied biochemistry at Otago University and gained a scholarship to complete a PhD at Cambridge, UK.
Dr. Patrick’ wife, Dr. Monica Gerth leads a multidisciplinary team of microbiologists, biochemists and ecologists in a quest to solve the problem of Kauri dieback in Northland.
Working with the mana whenua of Northland, and studying the micro biome in partnership with the guardians of these precious taonga, Monica has developed a powerful understanding of the devastating phytophthora fungus.
Today, Wayne delighted our Year 9 lads by describing his journey of study and gave them a sneak peek into the world of microbiology and biochemistry studies. Monica had some fabulous learning tools to enable our students to visualise her findings, including virtual reality headsets and microscopy techniques.
How lucky are we that our wonderful Alumnus return to tell their stories!
