END OF TERM 2
Welcome to our week 8 Newsletter for Term 2. It has been another busy two weeks with many assessments completed during this time as well as Hostel House Challenges and also School House Competitions.
Next week starts the greatly anticipated OBHS-OGHS Production titled “Cry Baby - the musical”, from Wednesday 30th June - Sunday 4th July in the Morris Joel Theatre, OBHS. Our very own Sam Gavin is involved and we will support the entire cast by taking the boys to watch the production on Thursday 1st July.
Mitchell Cup
We recently held the Mitchell Cup (Hostel House Challenge) Rowing Competition on Wednesday 23rd June onsite. It was a great success and all the boys got in and either competed well or supported their house with verve. It was much closer than years of the past with Campbell House taking it out by a mere two seconds only. Well done to all the boys who represented their house with honour, especially the wild card rowers who were drawn out of a hat just before the start of the race. Results as follows:
1 - Campbell
2 - Thompson
3 - Nicholson
4 - Hawthorne
School Haka House Competition.
Our Hostel boys represented their School Houses well today in the Annual Haka House Challenge. Our hostel boys featured prominently in every house. They did their houses proud, however there can be only one winner on the day. Congratulations for Saxton House who were the overall winners.
Man of the Week - 7
Congratulations to two boys this week.
Oscar Anderson: for an outstanding contribution to the 1st XV team on Saturday 13th June and also kicking the winning conversion and points under extreme pressure vs John McGlashan 1st XV.
Harison Heslip: for outstanding progress in Science and French and scoring 4 goals for his football team on Saturday 13th June.
Man of the Week - 8
Congratulations to Isaac Ottrey who is polite and punctual and always gives of his best. He is a diligent student who works through his work with great effort and puts in more than required. He gained excellence in his ecology study and is showing excellent progress in all his subjects having already achieved 18 credits at NCEA Level 2 Excellence and 7 at Merit. Isaac has also been successful in being accepted by the J R Mackenzie Trust in receiving a scholarship to attend Outward Bound in July.
Well done to Macleod Glaister who shared his experience of his unforgettable 21 days at outward bound this year. Macleod described the strong bonds he made with his fellow team members who were from all around NZ. There were many activities they had turns to lead which was a great experience. They were pushed to their limits and beyond. Forced to make decisions while experiencing the effects of fatigue. One example being a 13 hour day tramping! He said if anyone had the chance to go, he would recommend they do anything to make that happen. He feels he is now a better person, with an even better mindset. He has more appreciation for everyone that is in his life and what his Mum and Dad do for him. He has reached out with old friends and has kept in touch with people he met on Outward bound. He thanks Rotary for making this opportunity possible.
Blues and Nationals Honours
Congratulations to our students who received their Blues and National honours in a special ceremony. Special guests included Sir Graham Henry and Dr Richie Poulton.
We are particularly proud of our Hostel boys who were recipients of their Blues badges or Nationals piping on their blazers in recognition of winning a National title. These young men are fine examples of our school values and congratulate them on their hard work, commitment and dedication.

Otago Nuggets NBL Game
On Sunday 20th June our boys attended the Otago Nuggets Basketball game bs the Franklin Bulls. It was great to view another highly skilled sport and new atmosphere of professional basketball. Fantastic to also support OBHS teacher and coach of the Otago Nuggets, Mr Brent Matahaere as his team dominated from start to finish winning 104 - 64. Thank you also to Mrs Jordy Anderton-White for organising the tickets for us and joining us for the game.
Otago Boys' High School Clay Target Inter-Collegiate and Development Squads
Interest in Clay Target has seen numbers swell and they are now at capacity with 16 students across the Intercollegiate and Development Squads. When they are not out of town at competitions or Inter School events, students train on a Wednesday afternoon and Sunday morning.
Otago Intercollegiate Clay Target Championships Dunedin Clay Target Club.
Sunday 13th June saw our home club The Dunedin Clay Target Club host The Otago Intercollegiate Championships. Despite relentless rain 85 students from Otago, Southland and South Canterbury braved the elements to undertake a successful shoot. We were grateful for the marquees provided by the Sim and Nicholson families. Our Hostel families ensured the boys were well supported and fed. Three new junior students Hunter Burgess, Ben Roy and Eddie Burgess took part in their first event representing Otago Boys' High School.

Special Acknowledgement:
We commend our Hostel Prefect Sebastian (Seb) Whiston for organising a heartfelt gesture recently during an OBHS 1st XV match vs St Kevin's College. In acknowledgment and honour of a student of St Kevin's College who recently passed away, Seb organised an OBHS jersey to be gifted to the family of the student who lost his life, and to pass on the team and schools thoughts and love to the family at this sad time. A great demonstration of honour and respect Seb. Well done.
