The Science of Geology

Last week, ten of our Māori students took the opportunity to visit the marae to learn more about the science of Geology.

Arriving just in time for morning tea due to the frost, we found that we were one of only two schools present.  Following morning tea, we found out more about the marae as tūrangawaewae and its historical context before being shown around.

After lunch, the geologists present gave a summary about their research interests. There were some fantastic questions from our students, and they all came away with a greater appreciation of how geology impacts on our understanding of the world. Hopefully they’ve been inspired to consider Geology as a career!

I was very impressed with how our young men handled themselves on the day. The convener asked for one of our boys to provide the karakia before lunch, and Dennis stood up to take this leadership role. The boys also showed respect to the elders by helping to tidy up after lunch when asked. Our students did the school and themselves proud during our visit.
