Greetings to our hostel parents. It is great to have your boys back with us and involved in a number of activities already. We have had a successful inter-school exchange with Waitaki Boys’ High School winning in comprehensive fashion. We now look forward to our boys involved in a number of playoff games as we enter the final stages of the winter code season.

Our theme for this term is Perseverance/Manawanui knowing that this is a busy term filled with assessments and consolidation of the boys learning in each subject area.

Long Weekend - Boys to go home when they can

We ask that all boys go home on the weekend of Friday 13th - Monday 16th August as OBHS is closed on Monday 16th August for teacher only day. Boys can return on the evening/afternoon of Monday 16th August, ready for the start of the week on Tuesday 17th August. We understand that some may have sport on Saturday so if they need to stay until their game and then leave Saturday afternoon then this is fine. Families will need to let us know as soon as possible so we can plan for this.

Backroad Jersey's

Our boys Backroad Jersey’s arrived and were handed out on Monday of the first week. They look very sharp and don the special 150th Anniversary logo. Our boys already love them and they will get lots of wear out of them in the coming months and years. Some boys who missed out have an opportunity to secure one or another one in a one time only re-order next week if we get at least 12 more ordered. If you would like your son to have this opportunity then please let Janis Shaw know as soon as possible [email protected]

Service Month

This month of August our hostel boys are giving service back to our communities and helping out wherever possible. This Sunday we are cleaning up a number of streets we use regularly to make sure we take care of our neighborhood and keep it tidy. We will also be going out into the wider community to help with various tasks such as school visits both local and out in the country to share knowledge and support school events. We will also be visiting Marae that OBHS has a connection with. One of our big focus points to supporting Old Boys of our Hostel who support us in many ways. We can not thank you all enough for the support you give our boys and our hostel.

Man  of the Week

Special recognition to Year 10 Shamus Young who won Silver Medal in his grade at the South Island Shooting Championships. A great achievement for his first attempt at the South Island competition. Shamus has also demonstrated an excellent work ethic in class with some great results.  Well done Shamus we are very proud of you.

Music Room and Storage Container

Our music room is now being used and we are still accepting donations of instruments and furniture towards its use.

Our storage container now has power and is set up. We have storage pins along the sides of the inside walls to maximise the storage space for both mountain bikes and other items. Our boys can now store their bikes and other gear in here.

Culture

We continue to set a high standard and clear expectations of our boys to behave and live by, which sets the tone for the culture in School House. We draw on the OBHS values to ensure we reflect this in how we conduct ourselves.

Our boys have begun practicing in their House Groups this term in preparation for Cultural Night (date to be confirmed)

School House Haka specially composed to reflect who we are as a group and something that is special to us. The haka connects our school values and coat of arms with our School House goals and aspirations for our boys. Together we can overcome any challenges and fears in life.

House Competitions

House competitions this term will see the boys compete vigorously in Basketball and the Cultural Night. It will be an exciting few weeks as the boys prepare to lay it on the line for their house and future glory.

Sunday Activities

Our boys have had fun involved in the Clip and Climb and Leap activities last weekend.  Lots of internal challenges amongst the boys as they tried to out do each other in the climbing and the jumping activities.  Most importantly they had loads of fun and kept active.

Prefects Vs Staff Basketball

Well done to our boys who competed in the OBHS Prefects vs Staff Basketball game.  It was played in good spirit with both teams giving a good account of themselves.  Good value given by prefects Seb Whiston, Brayden Foote, Deputy Head of House Jak Stevenson and Head of House Jake Burgess.  On the other side Director of Boarding Mr Mahutariki added a few points and defensive pressure with the Staff taking out this battle.  Looking forward to the next challenge ahead.
