Good evening Hostel Parents welcome to our Week 4 Newsletter for Term 4. We are at the end of our last full week in school for our seniors and for our Year 13 boys this is there last full week of normal school life. It closes a special chapter of their life and we thank all of you who have added value to their lives and their time here in School House.
Long Weekend - Boys Offsite
There will be a Long Weekend from Friday 3rd December - Sunday 5th December. Therefore our boys will be required to enjoy a weekend at home from the afternoon of Thursday 2nd. There is no school on Friday 3rd December at OBHS. This also allows us to be able to host the annual Year 8 Sleepover this weekend. Under Alert Level 2 we can only have limited numbers etc. This opportunity allows us to provide this necessary experience for our future Year 9s of 2022. We hope you understand and support this initiative.
Men of the Week
Week 3
Congratulations to Year 10 Ryan Egan for demonstrating great leadership qualities and effort in school and in his sports. A great help around the hostel and in school. Well done Ryan!

A huge congratulations to our Year 13 Hostel boys, led by Captain and Head of School House, Jake Burgess, who won the annual Year 13 Hostel vs Day Boys Rugby League Match! Well done on a great performance built on determination, effort and a sense of unity to a strong brotherhood. A great Jersey presentation was also held the night before to honour our Year 13 boys. Also Congratulations to Year 9 Eddie Burgess who was voted to be the official Water Boy for this game by the Year 13s.

Our Hostel Prefects have been a great leadership group supporting the ethos and values of School House while enhancing every hostel boys experience in 2021. We say thank you to you all.

We will be joined by their parents and guardians, staff and our hostel boys. We will begin with an amazing formal dinner prepared by our Head Chef Donna King and our School House kitchen team at 6pm and start the formal presentations from approximately 6.45pm. You can join us live on our Hostel Facebook Page as we stream it for parents unable to attend.
Hostel Updates:
Wifi
We have recently updated our server and location access with the main locations updated with faster access and bandwidth which has been working very well during prep. We are in the process of updating the final locations around the hostel and adding in some new access points around our back senior dorms so coverage will be widespread. These works and updates have been ongoing throughout the past two terms and this term and has always remained a focus for us as a hostel. We aim to provide better learning platforms and opportunities whenever possible.
Music Room
Now that we have two pianos, a bass guitar, some small furniture and other smaller musical instruments stored in our music room for use, we are now expanding our boys' opportunities. Thanks to the support of our Hostel Parent Committee we are investing in some new exciting opportunities for our boys in the music room. We are in the process of researching and securing a music making set up which is to include some midi controllers, DJ gear, specific software to run off a laptop, and a possible small phone booth sized recording booth so our boys can make and record their own music. This will be supported by some lessons with some local experts to enhance our boys' experience and options.
Games/TV Room
Alongside our Parent Committee we are working to improve our games/TV room for our boys. We are intending to replace our current old pool table with a much better working one for our boys and also gathering more options like some lockable dart boards for supervised competitions as well as some more interactive outdoor games as well as some new furniture. We want to give our boys as many opportunities as possible.
Excellence in Sport
Well done to Year 9 boy Ashton Hansen who recently played in the Otago Squash Club, Squash Champs and won the Junior Boys title and the week before played in the Gore T and C Squash Club Champs and won both the Men's Open title and the Junior Boys Title. He was also named Southland Under 15 Age group Champion. Well done Ashton.
School Board Representative
Congratulations to Sam Gavin who has been elected as the Student Representative on the School Board. We know you will do your family and School House proud. Such a great acknowledgement and achievement, Well done Sam!
