Following very successful intercollegiate and club competitions some of our intercollegiate shooters challenged themselves last weekend with some outstanding results against some tough competitors.
On Friday, 12th November across three days, six students from Otago Boys' High School took part in the South Island Clay Target Championships held at the Dunedin Clay Target Club.
Our students competed as individuals, not representing the school, but shooting amongst the top 90 Clay Target Shooters in the South Island. Competition saw them shoot across Mens Grade event divisions, and in Junior Grade C, B and A. Commonwealth, Olympic and veteran shooters were amongst the competitors.
After the sunny 27 degrees on Friday, it was a cold and wet Saturday and Sunday shoot. Shooting only paused for thunder and lightning, so conditions were trying at times. It was great to see Ollie Nicholson, Henry Sim, Nicholas Sim, Jack Small, Will Scurr and Shamus Young take the opportunity and endure a tough three days of competition.
Three of our students, Henry Sim, Nicholas Sim and Jack Small were part of the six man team whose scores combined with those of three other men saw Otago win the Provincial Team Event. Nicholas Sim was named in the Junior South Island team to shoot against the North Island team in March in Christchurch.
Results:
Ollie Nicholson

2nd Overall Handicap by Distance

Special mention to Maree Whiteley and Rachael Nicholson who organised these students and kept them well feed and dry. Thank you to Ben Roy who was the team's gofer across the three days. Our students have very supportive and passionate parents who will continue to enable their boys maintain their skills as they continue to compete at club competitions across the South Island this summer. The boys have not got to this standard of sportsmanship by intercollegiate and inter-school shooting alone.
Finally, I wish to acknowledge Henry Sim, who has been our School Captain for Clay Target as he departs from Year 13. Henry has lead and guided our squad of students across Wednesday and Sunday practices at the Dunedin Clay Target Club. He has been instrumental in leading and organising our Hostel boys with the safe storage and transport of their guns. Additionally, Henry has ensured our School has been organised with the co-ordination of ammunition both for club and intercollegiate events. His knowledge and experience is valued and appreciated by the boys and their families. We wish him every success and look forward to seeing him still at the Dunedin Clay Target Club and at competitions in 2022.
