Welcome to our School House Newsletter for Week 3

Welcome to the School Newsletter for Week 3 of Term 1.

The start of the year has been very busy but filled with some exciting opportunities and new experiences.

Year 9 Hostel Camp

The traditional Year 9 Hostel Boys Camp was held last weekend at the Otago Boys’ High School, Mt Aspiring Lodge. Our boys were very excited and had some great experiences without digital devices supported by staff, Director of Boarding Mr Mahutariki, Rector Mr Hall, Mt Aspring Guru Mr Roe, with help of Housemasters Zaiya Mahutariki and Ben Sinnamon. Six of our Hostel Prefects also showed good leadership in supporting our new Year 9 Hostel Boys. The boys learnt about the history of the lodge and surrounding area, hostel history, completed Dam building, team challenges, fishing, swimming in the various swimming holes around the local river and waterfalls along with some fitness in the morning. Had a bit of a walk, spotlight at night and most importantly had the opportunity to bond and get to know each other. On the way home they also enjoyed spending time at the Kiwi Water Park in Cromwell while enjoying Subway on the way to the lodge and on the way home.

Prep Times

Reminder our boys have prep from generally 7pm - 8pm and on longer fine days we may hold prep earlier so the boys finish earlier and then go down to parks and play some sport together.

Value Focus - Respect - Whakaute

Our focus this term in School House and at School is Respect - Whakaute. Understanding that we all maybe different and have different interests but we can all still co-exist together as one brotherhood. Our learn to respect each other, respect each others property and the property of the hostel and the school. Respect to all staff and visitors. We have and will continue to have regular discussions around this value of Respect and ensure we can create a positive environment for our boys and staff to live. It is also part of our School House Haka.

Mahia ki te tangata tau, e whai nga. - Whakaute

Through your hardwork and dedication in all you do, for everyone, you can achieve - Respect.

Weekend Activities

The boys so far have enjoyed some fun activities such as Battle Combat Laser Tag in the forest, paintball shooting, and a day at the beach. Lots of fun has been had by all including staff as we continue to provide some opportunities for all our boys to be involved. Along with this there have been many trips to Roberts Park to play some sport like touch, rugby, ultimate frisbee, and then even down to school to Littlebourne to play some cricket or throw the ball around and also utilise the school gym facilities.

Prefect Weekend and Leadership Camp

Before our boys returned or joined School House we spent some time with our School House Prefects consolidating some leadership, set some goals for the year and focus points for the start of the Term.  Along the way the boys cycled about 80km in one day and had some fun time together as a group.  Thank you to Lorraine and Stu Duncan for hosting us for the weekend and providing such an amazing venue and backdrop to our time together, as well as some special time at the Family Dam and batch.  We would like to acknowledge Stu for spending some time discussing what leadership is and being role models to our next generation of hostel boys.
