Otago Boys' High School Rowing Club attended the SI Meridian Junior Regatta 26th – 27th February and had an awesome weekend with some great results.
The lake was flat and calm throughout the regatta which made for some excellent times over the 2km course. South Island Rowing have done an incredible job setting up the venue at Lake Ruataniwha to operate under covid restrictions, and while no spectators were permitted, the event went without a hitch.
In the U18 coxless pairs oars, Henry Kirk and Grayson Small had a six second win over two Christchurch Boys' High crews to claim gold. They followed this up with a well contested second place in the U18 double sculls to claim silver. Henry Kirk also claimed silver in the U18 single sculls, narrowly missing gold by 0.78 sec!
Our U15 coxed quad scull (J Scott, H Thode, L Heffernan, T Dennison, cox R Nichol) cleaned up the field by 15 seconds to claim gold and a South Island ranking of #1 for the crew.
We also claimed silver with the U15 coxed octuple scull (J Scott, E Burgess, H Thode, N Thom, T Dennison, H Lucas, Z Wikio, J Flannery, cox G Anderson), and the U18 novice coxed quad scull (J Scott, J Flannery, L Heffernan, E Burgess, cox G Anderson).
We had two excellent bronze results in the U18 and U17 coxed quad scull (H Graham, C Tisdall, T Scurr, A Drummond, cox R Nicholl), helped by Grayson Small in the U18 final.
Many regattas at Lake Ruataniwha are livestreamed. Anyone wanting to keep tabs on progress can connect through rowit.nz
Otago Boys' have two regattas left for the season, the South Island Secondary School Rowing Championships 11 – 13 March, and the Aon Maadi Cup currently scheduled 28th March – 2nd April.
