From the 3rd till the 6th of March, Year 13 students Cole Gibbons and Luke Moffitt travelled to Hawkes Bay for the 2022 Jennian Homes Track and Field Championships.
On Thursday, Luke had a busy day competing in the Triple Jump, Pole Vault, and the 300m Hurdles. He started his day in tight competition to take out Gold in the U18 men's Pole Vault with a jump of 3.68m. This jump was a new personal best. He continued his form into the afternoon winning a silver in a large men's U18 Triple Jump field, with a jump of 13.65m, which was also a new personal best.
Luke also competed in the 300m Hurdles. This race had two heats where they were both collaborated to find a winner. Winning his heat by quite a margin with a time of 41.69s he managed to place 5th, as the next heat was faster.
Later that day Cole competed in the Otago U20 men's 4x100m Relay. In this team were two of Otago Boys' old boys, Cameron Moffitt and Hamish Moore. They started out strong but unfortunately Cameron pulled a hamstring halfway into his leg of the race which set the team back from the rest of the other competitors. Both Cole and Hamish tried to recover but only managed to place 4th. On Friday, Cole had an early start taking the Gold in the men's U20 110m Hurdles with a time of 15.77s, this time was a new personal best and a new 2022 New Zealand U20 leading time. He then competed in the men's U20 Pole Vault a couple of hours later.
Cole came away with a Silver in the Pole Vault with a jump of 3.88m which is a new personal best. He then went on and ran the 200m in a strong field where he managed to place 5th in his heat with a new season-best of 23.42.O.
Overall, both Luke and Cole had a very successful championship each taking away a New Zealand title.
