Last week 10S went to Mt Aspiring camp, and it was an absolute blast!
From the beautiful scenic walks, to kayaking down rapids, and even staying the night in a tent with 2 other people, cooking breakfast and dinner over a fire.
We all arrived outside of the archway at 6:45am to load up the bus and head off. First stop Wanaka. Everyone dashed to get lunch or go to the toilets. I walked to New World to stock up on snacks as to not go hungry on the 5 big days to come. When we got to the Aspinall homestead, it was revealed to us that this was as far as the bus could take us. So we chucked our packs in the van and started walking. After about an hour we arrived. Everyone chipped in and started unloading the food from the van.
The next day was filled with activities such as bowls and ping pong, but we mostly prepared for the overnight trip.
The overnight camp began with 2 hours of walking across rapids (on a bridge of course) and through farm land. After we arrived, we started cooking food and I have to say that there were some pretty hungry faces. After tea, we had some down-time. When dark settled in for the night, all the boys got into their sleeping bags to nod off. Morning came and we set up the porridge, Jamie (Oliver) Hall was a whiz at cooking porridge and created the best breakfast you could ask for in the wilderness. After breakfast, we packed up and headed off for the walk back. This time it's much quicker though, because Mr Zani let us do a river crossing which cut off 1km from the walk.
The next few days went by in a zip, doing countless walks and activities. Before we knew it, we are walking back out to the bus. We stopped in Alexandra on the way back for some lunch and then arrived safely back in Dunedin.
I am very glad to be able to share our camp experience with you. I hope that you are looking forward to it if you are in Year 9, because I personally can't wait to get back.
