Matariki Weekend. This is Friday 24th June to Sunday 26th June. This is also a compulsory weekend out and national long weekend also. Boys can depart from Thursday 23rd June.

Hostel Open Day a Success

Thank you to all those families in our community who attended our Open Day event last Friday 20th June. We had a great turn out and were able to share lots of information and answer questions. Well done to a number of our Year 12 boys who hosted our potential new Year 9s for 2023 and led tours with our parents and the boys. They were a great representation of School House and their families. This flowed down to school with some excellent leadership shown by a number of our Year 13 hostel boys alongside a number of our current Year 9s. Well done to all our boys and especially our staff for their efforts. We will be hosting a Year 7 Open Day later in Term 4 this year.

Man of the Week

Congratulations to Year 9 Alex Glover who nailed his Exam in Highland Dancing gaining 100% in both his theory and practical and finished top of his class while winning gold medals in a recent regional competition. He also did this with an injured toe after dropping his motorbike on his foot. Well done Alex. A great example of Excellence and Perseverance.

Activities:

Boys have enjoyed the final home games of the Highlanders Team. Thank you to Highlanders Rugby, who supplied a supporters hat or beanie for those boys who attended. We also had some fun at the Escape Artists Rooms in Dunedin CBD. Some challenging tasks and problems to solve but the boys all achieved success and managed to escape their rooms. Lots of fun had by all. Boys also enjoyed some time together down at Moana Pools and a bit of a bombing competition as well. Unfortunately for the boys, the Housemasters won that competition. Inflatable World was another fun activity as was some Otago Nuggets Basketball games.

All the Best

It was a sad moment on Friday last week as we fare-welled our Van Kessel boys, Jayden and Bryant. Their family have purchased a farm in Morrinsville in the Waikato Region and are heading up there to embark on some new adventures. We are gutted they are leaving but know they have some good opportunities in front of them. Thank you to Guido and Elise for sharing your boys with us for the past three and a half years. The boys onsite sent them off in style performing our School House Haka. A fitting tribute to two fine young men. Make the most of your opportunities boys!

Mitchell Cup - House Competition

This term sees the boys compete in three main events. We have the upcoming Indoor Rowing Challenge that is always hotly contested and very popular in the McCaw Room in two weeks time. We then have the House Basketball Competition hosted down in the School Gym over the next three weeks on a Wednesday evening. These events are being organised by our Hostel Prefects and Sports Leaders, Cody Campbell and Ned Flanery. Added to this we have the return of the School House Cultural Night, where each house will perform and School House Haka (Te Haka Wharekura), a Skit with the theme of “Brotherhood”, and a Lip Sinc. All three items will be judged on sound, performance, accuracy, and audience engagement. This is currently scheduled for Wednesday 29th June. So there is lots going on this term but that's just how we like in School House, giving our boys as much opportunity as possible to be better than the day before.

Pink Shirt Day - Stand Up Against Bullying

Last week we as a hostel acknowledged and held discussions around what Pink Shirt Day means and standing up against bullies and for what is right.  It was a good platform to discuss this topic and then come together as one and acknowledge it.  Our boys constructed their own Pink bracelets entwined with OBHS navy blue and wore them together at school.  Our Hostel Prefects united together in wearing pink ties and speaking about the topic at school.  We are proud of all our boys.
