Greetings to our School House Parents and Wider community. Welcome back to another term filled with fun, excitement, and some learning along the way. It is great to have our boys back in the hostel breathing life back into the place and adding to the legacy. Here are some important updates and information.
Man of the Week
Congratulations to Year 12 student Phoenix Tapatu who was awarded Man of the Match for the 1st XV in a huge performance carrying strong all game and making valuable metres.
Congratulations to Year 10 Ashton Hansen who recently won the South Island U15 Squash Title over the holiday break. A great display of skill and talent.
Well done to both our School House Hostel Boys.
Culinary Arts
Huge congratulations to Deputy Head of Hostel, Sam Gavin who teamed up with day boy Max Napier to enter the New Zealand Secondary School Culinary Competition. This was a regional competition involving teams from Otago, Southland and the West Coast and the beautiful dish prepared and presented by our boys won Gold.
With the win, Sam and Max are now invited to compete again this September in Auckland in the national grand final which will include eight other teams from other regions in the country.
Congratulations Max and especially Sam, and good luck!!
Student of the Term
Congratulations to Year 11 student Ryan Egan who was awarded the student of the term 2 at school for Year 11. A huge acknowledgement to his consistent effort and attitude inside and outside of the classroom. Ryan has received praise from all of his teachers for his hardwork and dedication in giving his best effort at all times. Well done Ryan.
Sunday Activities
This Sundays see’s a number of our boys head out on a Fishing Charter to hopefully reel in the ‘big one’. They will depart hostel at 6:15am to head to Moeraki and launch from there. It should be a great day of fishing. Lets hope the weather holds after Saturday. Next Sunday will see our boys entered into a ‘Battle Combat” outdoor laser competition with other groups around Dunedin as part of the U15 Blues Rugby Fundraiser. Should be a lot of fun over the next two weekends.
Kings High School Interschool
Well done to the teams and individual competitors who have already competed this week against Kings High School. The Interschool points are very close which a number of draws so far meaning the final games this weekend will determine the final overall result. Good luck to all our remaining hostel boys who are competing on Saturday.
Backroads Jersey Order
We are in the process of making the annual Hostel Backroads Jersey order over the next two weeks. If you would like to order a jersey for your son, please email [email protected] The approximate cost is $120. We will have examples for the boys to try on next week.
New CCTV in Thomson Dorm and Prep Room.
With our ongoing upgrades this year, we have installed new cameras in Thomson Dorm allowing us to continue keeping our boys safe and monitored. As always these only face in the corridors and not in any rooms or private spaces. We have also installed a new camera on the other side of the prep room ensuring we have complete coverage of the room so we can keep our boys devices safe and monitored when they are on the chargers overnight.
Otaki Scholars Visit
Once a year the Head Boy of Robert Gordon’s College from Scotland is given a scholarship to tour New Zealand and key schools in New Zealand. Otago Boys’ High School has been a host of this recipient for a number of years. This year two boys travelled to New Zealand as due to covid there was no travelling in the previous two years. We hosted Angus Jack (Head Boy 2021) and Patrick Robinson (Head Boy 2020) who stayed with us for 3 nights and were involved in a variety of activities such as speaking to our assemblies, visiting key landmarks, training for the 1st XV rugby team, and learning alongside our boys in class. Two fine young gentlemen whom we wish all the best in the future and their remaining tour as they head north to other schools. Attached is a brief history of the scholarship.
Upcoming Events:
Mitchell Cup - House Challenges: There will be netball and Cultural Night in Week 8
We will be hosting a Junior Social in Week 5
Boys are back into their routines of learning and having some fun.
