Kia orana tatou katoatoa i te aroha poria o to tatou nei Hatu, ko iesu mesia. Greetings in the middle Cook islands Language Week. We hope all our School House Hostel Community have had a good week. This week we have held our Annual Open Night for all the general day families, with great success. Having learnt from last years event which was huge and had large attendance figures with us unable to literally fit everyone in the auditorium, we held two sessions this year so families could have a more personable experience and have options on timings. A large number of our hostel boys gave of their time and service to support the night from being ushers, guides, admin support, subject specific help, and even cooks providing food for our helpers. Our hostel boys did a great job.

Congratulations to Year 13 Sam Gavin who won Man of the Week for his efforts in winning Gold in the New Zealand Secondary School Culinary Competition (Southern Region) alongside day boy Max Napier. Well done to all our hostel boys who played in the game. Also well done to all our boys who participated in the Interschool which saw OBHS winning the overall Interschool.

Swimming Excellence

Well done to Year 13 Daniel Gilbert who competed in the New Zealand Secondary School Swimming Championships over the weekend in Hamilton. With over 900 swimmers the event is getting very competitive. Daniel won a Bronze medal in the 200m Butterfly, a 4th in the 100m Butterfly, missing out by 0.01s, and a 5th in his Freestyle event. A great example of hardwork and dedication.

Online Gaming Room:

We have set up our Large Screens in the McLeod Room so our boys who enjoy some online gaming can now enjoy this platform together and with a better experience. Thank you to our Hostel Parent Committee who have led this project.

OBHS Students Innovation - Year 13 Boys Business Studies Project.

Eleven years ago, we had a first-hand experience with house flooding. A tap burst behind the sink and 45,000L of water flooded through our house. As a result of this, we have created HYDRETTA. HYDRETTA is targeted toward farmers, lifestyle block owners and holiday house owners.

We are a Year 13 Business Studies group competing in the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES). Earlier in the year, we sent out a survey regarding our product. Our product is a timing system that controls the electricity to your water pump, reducing the risk of floods significantly and giving its owners peace of mind. It works by shutting off the pump after a pre-set (by the user) amount of time, helping with both flooding by fault, or accidentally leaving a tap running. HYDRETTA is an important investment, especially in areas where water is a precious commodity.

We attended the Otago Business Expo last Thursday night, and combined with this and our survey, we have received considerable interest in our idea. In addition, we are in the process of getting both Adams Plumbing, and Reece Ltd on board, to help with both installation and sales/marketing of our product.

Through a local electronic design manufacturer (Kamahi Electronics), we will be producing our product, making it a reality.

We are currently taking pre-orders. To order or to find out more information about us and our product, head over to our website: https://hydretta.mystorbie.com/, or email us directly at [email protected].

Upcoming Events:

Mitchell Cup - House Challenges: There will be Swimming and Cultural Night in Week 8

We will be hosting a Junior Social in Week 5.

Follow us on our social media platforms Instagram: @obhshostel and Facebook Otago Boys’ High School Hostel for information and activities our boys are doing.
