Talofa lava, and greetings to all our School House Hostel and OBHS Community. We have had a good week of your boys consolidating their learning and preparing for upcoming events like exams, polyfest, and tournament week to name a few. Added to this we have had some boys play in their finals for sports such as soccer, rugby, and hockey.

Man of the Week

Congratulations to Year 11 Hunter Burgess who has always been available to help lead our school with the sounds of the bagpipes. Hunter has always been there for the 1st XV, was part of our open night even with injured fingers, supported our prefects last week as well before their netball match against St Hilda’s. A great School House man who brings the x-factor with his skill in playing the Bagpipes. Well done Hunter.

Sunday Activity

Last sunday our boys enjoyed some Outdoor Laser Tag with our friends from Battle Combat in Dunedin. Lots of fun had by all and is a good cause to support the U15 Blues Rugby Team who are heading away to Tournament Week in 10 days time. A number of hostel boys are also in this team.

This Sunday our boys are finally going Charter Boat Fishing

NPC Rugby has started

Our hostel boys attended the most recent home game for the Otago NPC team which saw a number of OBHS old boys involved including the debut of old boy Jake Te Hiwi. Our boys enjoyed a good night out and a great result for Otago over Hawkes Bay.

Hostel Boys in Shooting Competition

Article by JACQUELINE IRVING — AUG 19, 2022

A minus three degree frost was a refreshing way to start the intercollegiate shoot in Balfour on Sunday.

Diesel burners warmed up some until the sun was able to thaw the ground. Sunshine and still conditions prevailed for most of the day's shooting.

The squad members: Nic Sim, Ollie Nicholson, Shamus Young, Charlie Scurr, Johnathon King, Jackson Stevens, Ben Roy, Darrius Rogers and Dustin Young proudly represented our school.

Senior Results:
2nd Single Rise Overall Ollie Nicholson (Year 13)
2nd Senior Skeet Ollie Nicholson
3rd Point Score Ollie Nicholson

3rd Single Rise Nic Sim (Year 13)

2nd Single Barrel Shamus Young (Year 11)

3rd Single Rise (Junior due to birth date) Jonathon King (Year 11)

Junior Results:
1st Point Score Dustin Young (Year 9)

1st Single Barrel Jackson Stevens (Year 10)

Our clay target shooters had their success acknowledged across senior and junior assemblies this week. Practices continue as we prepare for the forthcoming Wanaka and Alexandra intercollegiate competitions. Participation and success across competitions allows our boys to qualify to shoot both South Island and New Zealand Secondary School Championships at the start of the next school holidays.

There will be a lot of kilometres clocked up and ammunition spent between now and then.

1st XI Win Threepeat Premier Trophy

Well done to Year 13 hostel boy Hayden Teixeira who was a key part of the 1st XI that held onto the Premier Trophy for a threepeat with a close 2-1 win over King's High School with Rory Hibbert scoring twice. It was a superb team effort, with the defence under huge pressure for the last 15 minutes when we conceded a goal just after scoring our second.

10 Blues XI Win Junior Premier Trophy

Well done to hostel boys Gunha Park and Ruie Hyslop who were part of the Year 10 Blues that won their final over King's High School 6-1 in a pretty dominant performance with 3 goals to Toby Orchiston, Ben Crump 2 and Cormack De La Harpe with a 25m screamer.

All the boys put in a display of controlled passing and deserved to hold onto the Junior Premier trophy.

Reminder:

Teacher Only Day and Long Weekend

Next week Friday 26th August is a Teacher Only Day, therefore we are encouraging our hostel boys to head home for the long weekend and enjoy some family time.  The hostel will still remain open for those boys who have commitments over the weekend and leading into departing for Tournament Week.  If boys are staying in hostel next weekend, families must inform staff by Monday 22nd August so we can plan accordingly. Thank you in advance.

Changes: Boys who order takeaways on the weekends (the only time takeaways are permitted) will not be permitted to bring these items into the hostel. Rather they will have an allocated place and table and chairs outside the Weekend Matrons Room for them to consume their food before placing their rubbish in the allocated bin and then can enter the hostel again.

There will also be a roll call taken during dinner times to make sure that we can follow up on boys regularly not making dinners times to see how we can better support them.

When boys sign out on leave they will be asked to confirm if they will be back for dinner and then also lunches on the weekends. This will also allow us to plan more accurately accordingly and not waste too much food when meals are being prepared for your son/s and they are getting takeaways instead. Boys are more than welcome to eat both as long as they confirm they are back for dinner etc.

Upcoming Events:

Tomorrow: Saturday 20th August is our Year 13 Formal.  We will be hosting our boys, their families and partners in the dining room from 5:30pm.

Mitchell Cup - House Challenges: There will be Swimming and Cultural Night in Week 8

We will be hosting a Junior Social Next week - Wednesday 24th August in the McCaw Room. The theme is Hawaiian. Our hostel prefects have been busy planning for this event for our boys and will supported by our amazing kitchen staff in providing some yummy snacks and refreshments.

Follow us on our social media platforms Instagram: @obhshostel and Facebook Otago Boys’ High School Hostel for information and activities our boys are doing.
