Konnichiwa, and greetings to all our School House Hostel and OBHS Community. This has been a short but jam packed week with both hostel events and school events.
Man of the Week
Congratulations to Year 11 Freddie Hore who was part of a group that won the Maatangi Whenua Regional geography competition. He competed in a number of different rounds and they came out Regional Winners. Added to this their scores were compared against all other regional winners in the country and they have now been announced as National Winners with the best scores across the motu.
Freddie is also getting straight excellences in his assignments, he is polite, engaged and an interested student. A clear demonstration of our hostel values in Excellence, Honour and Respect. Well done Freddie.
Congratulations to Year 9 Hoani Kiwara who has demonstrated great effort in his class work recently, and received positive feedback from his teachers. He has also been a great help around the hostel supporting his mates and staff alike. He also recently found a wallet that was lost in the community and handed it in to staff. A very thankful person in the community came to collect it.
Charter Boat Fishing
The much-awaited hostel charter boat fishing trip finally got the go-ahead yesterday. It was definitely a case of third time-lucky as this trip had been put off twice due to bad weather and unfavourable conditions. With nice warm weather and even nicer flat waters, the fish were biting and our boys made and enjoyed the absolute best of it. Everyone caught a fish or two, and a couple of boys caught well over a dozen fish each! Highlight of the day was year 9 Toby McClean catching a 51cm blue cod which was 2cm off being the biggest blue cod ever caught on the boat we were on. Thank you to Teaching Staff member Richard Roe for volunteering to help drive and supervise our boys for this very enjoyable activity alongside our Senior Director Pita Sinamoni. A great day was had by all. Special thanks to Ezy Fish Charters and Captain Paul for hosting us.
Junior Social
Our junior hostel boys had a Junior Social in the McCaw Room on Wednesday night hosted by our Hostel Prefects, who organised and supervised the event alongside our staff. A good example of leadership, excellence, and honour. They did a fantastic job and our juniors had a lot of fun and socialising with our visitors from St Hilda’s and Columba College. Thanks to Head Chef Donna and the kitchen team who put on some great snacks and refreshments.
Hostel Out in Support of our OBHS 1st XI Hockey Team
It was great to take our entire hostel down to the Hockey Turf to support our 1st XI Hockey team in the Premier Schools final. A great display of camaraderie and brotherhood by School House hostel to support our OBHS team and especially a number of hostel boys who played in the team. It was a very close first half with a great goal scored by Year 10 hostel boy Will Nichol. With the scores evenly poised at 2-2 at half time OBHS were right in the contest against the more fancied and experienced opposition. Unfortunately as the second half progressed OBHS were unable to maintain their level and came second in the contect. Regardless of the result, it was great to support our Hockey team and see them demonstrate their outstanding ability in the final.
School House Team members in the final, included:
Hayden Clarke
Thomas O’Connor
Hamish Leyser
Will Nichol
Hudson McKnight
Hayden Becker
Will Helm
Jacob Robinson
Year 13 Formal
It was great to host our Year 13 boys, their partners and their families for pre-formal snacks and photos. The boys had a good night out at the Otago Museum for their Year 13 Formal and looked sharp.
Reminder:
Changes: Boys who order takeaways on the weekends (the only time takeaways are permitted) will not be permitted to bring these items into the hostel. Rather they will have an allocated place and table and chairs outside the Weekend Matrons Room for them to consume their food before placing their rubbish in the allocated bin and then can enter the hostel again.
There is a roll call taken during dinner times to make sure that we can follow up on boys regularly not making dinner times to see how we can better support them.
When boys sign out on leave they will be asked to confirm if they will be back for dinner and then also lunches on the weekends. This will also allow us to plan more accurately accordingly and not waste too much food when meals are being prepared for your son/s and they are getting takeaways instead. Boys are more than welcome to eat both as long as they confirm they are back for dinner etc.
Upcoming Events:
Mitchell Cup - House Challenges: There will be Swimming and Cultural Night in Week 8
