Theo Smith, Rohan Leckie-Zaharic (both Year 13) and Flynn MacGill-Brown (Year 10) at Otago Boys' High School competed at the Diving New Zealand South Island Championships during the last weekend in August.
Theo, who had taken a year out from diving to concentrate on coaching, got back
into training at the end of last term. Theo competed in both 1m and 3m, Open Men’s and Junior Elite Age Group A, achieving PB’s on 1m and 3m, Junior Elite and 3m Open Men’s and achieving an unofficial qualifying score for Junior Worlds on 1m. Theo won the W.H Williams trophy for the highest points after the first four dives on any board, the Kirkley Challenge Cup awarded for the highest score in any Open Men’s Event and the NZ Men’s NZASA cup for Open Men’s top score. Rohan competed in the Open Men’s 1m and Junior Elite 1m and 3m events placing 2nd in all events.
Flynn has recently returned to diving after a two-year hiatus due to major leg surgery. He competed in Age Group B for 1m and 3m. He managed to regain all his dives in only five weeks of training post recovery.
Theo and Rohan are training hard in preparation for the Merv Campbell Invitational Competition being held in Auckland from the 2-5th October. This event is a qualifying event for the Junior Worlds being held in Montreal, Canada from the 27th November to 4th December.
Otago Boys' and Girls' High Schools will be jointly represented at the National Secondary Schools Championships in Auckland on the 8th and 9th October by a combined team of Theo, Rohan and Flynn, alongside Lyvia Nilsen (Year 10) from Otago Girls'.
