French and German food days are always popular with the boys but in Year 10 we take things to the next level by learning how to cook some traditional dishes ourselves!
Boys in the French class turned their hands to a dish from the Alsace region of France, right on the border with Germany. They made a "Tarte Flambée" or "Flammekuchen" as it is known in the local Alsation language. This consists of a pizza dough base, topped with crème fraîche, caramelised onion and bacon. For dessert a "Meringue Glacée aux Framboises" disappeared in a flash! The verdict? Vraiment délicieux!
Not to be outdone, the German boys made "Koenigsbergers Klopse", a highlight of historical East Prussian cuisine. Fittingly these meatballs were a favourite in the GDR, former East Germany. Boys are currently studying the history of a divided Germany, the Berlin Wall and German Reunification as well as watching a series about a Stasi secret agent. These meatballs are slowly poached in stock making them especially soft and tender. Alongside the creamy lemon caper sauce, everyone agreed they were "superlecker"! For dessert came "Spaghetti Eis", an ice cream sundae invented by an Italian immigrant more than 50 years ago which has become a favourite in ice cream parlours all over Germany.
Why not give these great dishes a try this weekend?
