Honouring boys who uphold our values

In this final week of term, the juniors were awarded the Term 4 Value Badge for Excellence.

Once more, there was an increase in the number of boys gaining badges and a relatively even distribution across Year 9 and Year 10. This term, Year 9 (51%) pipped Year 10 (49%) at the post. Overall, throughout the year it was the Year 10 boys who had the upper hand winning 299 badges compared to Year 9’s 281. The staff have played a big part in ensuring buy-in to the values badge initiative; writing a total of 910 postcards and awarding 2,916 house points.

It was McIndoe House who won this term’s count, with Aspinall and Park in joint second place and Saxton bringing up the rear. Over the whole year, Park and McIndoe have fought it out for the top spot with Park house the eventual victors by a margin of 2 badges. No doubt the competition will be equally as fierce next year!

Other notable highlights of Term 4 were as follows:

Highest effort grade (4.73) - Eli Tucker Year 9

Highest number of house points (13) - Ben Couling Year 9

Highest number of post cards (5) - Kase Robertson Year 9

Of course, collecting the four badges of Respect, Courage, Perseverance and Excellence also qualifies boys to receive the final Honour badge at Junior Prize Giving. A student-led panel decided that the final badge should be Honour because if you displayed the other four values, you were deemed to be honouring yourself as a learner, your school, your whanau and wider school community. Boys have two years to collect all of the badges, so those who miss out in Year 9 should still work towards this in Year 10.

Getting the Honour badge is rightly harder than gaining individual badges and 88 boys crossed the stage at Junior Prize Giving to collect this award. These young men are now role models in the junior school. We will look to them to not only uphold the values themselves, but also to remind their brothers that they should do so as well.

We want boys to actually live the school values and not just talk about them. To truly have honour one must have respect, courage, perseverance and strive for personal excellence. All of our values require you to not only do the right thing but to challenge others to do so too and to speak up when you see something that’s going wrong. In this way, we place our values at the heart of our daily life at Otago Boys’ and hopefully create a better environment for all.

Highest number of post cards (13) - Sunny Jiang Year 9

Parents of Year 9 and 10 boys can give anonymous feedback on these badges by completing the google form sent out earlier this week.
