Welcome to our Week 2 Newsletter
Tena koutou e te whanau whanui o te Whare Kura. Greetings and welcome to our School House Hostel families in week 2 of the School year. It has been another busy week with a return to routines after the long weekend. We celebrated with the announcement of our School Prefects for this year and Academic Blues and Centurions from 2022. This was finished off with the return of our Annual Athletics Day. Our hostel boys had a very successful day competing for their school houses with a number of winners and top 8 place winners.
Man of the Week
Congratulations to Year 9 Hunter Ruxton for putting his hand up to help around hostel and especially around camp over the weekend. He has a great attitude and genuine good lad.
Congratulations to Year 13 School House Prefects Marco Cheu and Tony Tang for being great help to staff over these past 2 weeks, and they have always been available to step in when other boys on duty are not around. A great example of above the hoops.
Year 9 School House Hostel Camp - Mt Aspiring
The Year 9 boys had a great long weekend away at OBHS Mt Aspiring Lodge alongside Mr Mahutariki, Mr Hall, Mr Rowe, and Mrs Martin. Team building activities, physical and mental challenges including the Inaugural Year 9 Rock Challenge were completed with a whole lot of fun. Supported by our School House Prefects, the Year 9 group were able to come together as a cohort and develop connections and friendships. They set an impressive time of 30 minutes and 29 seconds in the Rock Challenge, carrying a rock around a 5 km course up and down the valley and around the lodge in a relay formal where every boy carried the rock and added value. The boys planned out the race and the placement of each other. They worked very well together and enjoyed the experience. It has been a great way for the boys to start the year.
School Prefects
Congratulations to 2023 School House Prefects, Hamish Leyser, Rota Lafita, and Tony Tang who were also named as OBHS School Prefects for this year. Well done gentlemen.
School Athletics Day
On Friday 10th February our boys all descended on to the Caledonian Track for the Annual OBHS Athletics Day which has not been held for two years thanks to covid. It was a great day filled with enthusiasm and excitement. Some great performances from multiple hostel boys and excellent involvement from all.
Long Weekend - Otago Anniversary Weekend - Weekend out
The weekend of Friday 17th - Monday 20th March is a Weekend out of hostel. Please make sure your boys leave is in and transport is organised etc.
150th Reunion just over one month away - February 24-25 2023.
The 150th Reunion is three weeks away. Both evening events are completely full and the day activities look to be very popular also. The planning committee has done a great job keeping this organised and ready to go. They still need some help for some final items. As part of the event there will be a BBQ put on the Saturday 25th February as part of the special sports games being organised between hostel and day boy Old Boys including the cricket match. We would really appreciate some donations of meat for this BBQ please. Items such as sausages, steaks etc would be welcomed in order for the planning committee to run this. All proceeds from the BBQ go directly to the School House Hostel for your boy/s. If you can support please email [email protected]
Thank you to those families who have already donated towards this event.
Upcoming Dates:
Monday 13th-14th February - Timaru Boys High School Interschool - Summer
Friday 17th March - OBHS Old Boys Golf Day
Monday 20th March - Otago Anniversary Day
