We almost had a few extra students as we crossed over with 10Y leaving for their Mt Aspiring camp. However, after pointing them in the right direction, we headed north towards Oamaru.
While experiencing some heavy downpours enroute it was fine for the event, albeit a bit cooler than we have enjoyed recently. With pre-season starting for many winter codes we were light on participants, just three individuals and a team, for this event.
Pressure was off the U-19 team as they were the only entrants in their category. Subsequently, Roland Ozanne, Javara Clark and Cameron McFarlane walked away with a South Island title.
Entered in more populated categories, the junior and intermediate athletes had more competition. Henry Hodgson maintained his great form achieving a silver medal in the U-14s. The improving Leo Garden finished eighth in the same category.
Ruie Hyslop has been a quick learner in this sport and placed a respectable fifth in the U-16s. What is particularly encouraging is the gains he has made on his competition from Challenge Wanaka, last month. With another event under his belt he will be one to watch at the Secondary School Nationals later this month.
A big thank you to those parents that came and supported (and even raced) this event. The future of the sport at Otago Boys’ looks to be in good shape.
