This term, in Year 12 Outdoor Education, students have been looking at the significance of Surfing for themselves, others and society.
As well as learning and practising Surfing in their practical classes, students have been introduced to a number of the sociological factors relating to surfing, including things like the history and culture. As part of this they have learned about the well-respected Hawaiian waterman, Duke Kahanamoku. Duke is widely recognised as being the person who brought modern day surfing to NZ.
In memory of 'The Duke's' influence, a Surfing contest is held in New Brighton, Christchurch (where one of his NZ displays were held). Last weekend the Owen's brothers competed in this event (which is also part of a National 'Grom' [young surfer] Surfing Series). Jake made it through to the quarter finals in the U-18s, while his younger brother, Alexis, made the semis in the U-18s and came 2nd in the U-16 Boys division.
