Greetings to our School House Families and wider community. We hope you have enjoyed some time together during the holidays and are ready for another packed and exciting Term 2.
Sunday 23th April - Return to Hostel
Boys can arrive from 2:00 pm on wards. If some families are not returning until Tuesday please make sure you have adjusted your leave accordingly.
Monday 24th April - Modified Timetable - ANZAC Service.
Here is the plan for Monday.
Tuesday - ANZAC Day
Tuesday will treated like a weekend day with some modified meal times and activities planned. Every boy in hostel will be invited to attend the ANZAC Service with the Rector and OBHS. Everyone is to meet down at the Exchange by 5:45am as per previous years. Some sports teams will be already doing this. Breakfast at hostel will be at 9:00am and Lunch will be served in hostel at 12:30pm with Dinner at the usual time of 5:30pm. We will also have some activities planned for boys to join if they wish.
Wananga Days - for all Seniors
All seniors are reminded starting from Wednesday 26th April, there will be each subject spending a day each on their learning together. Below is the schedule for which subject your son has each day during Wananga Days. These days will replace the students normal timetabled day.
Driving and the Teenage Brain
On Wednesday May 10th, from 7pm-9pm in the School Auditorium, all hostel boys will be given the opportunity to attend this amazing event with Greg Murphy (motor racing legend) and Nathan Wallace Neuroscience Educator) who are touring NZ educating young drivers and their parents about safer driving and health and well-being. The cost is approximately $11 for the boys and will be optional instead of prep that night. Below is a link to more information
Do you know a young driver? Would you like to know about how the brain works, or doesn’t work while driving?

Teacher Only Day - Monday 8th May
There is a teacher only day at OBHS at the above date. The hostel will remain open as usual during this "long weekend" as many winter sports start on this weekend also. We understand that families may take this opportunity to enjoy a long weekend together. This is fine although we ask that families are aware that boys are still committed to the sports teams and groups they have committed to this year, so those teams are not affected by hostel boys absence.
Rolling Strike from Tuesday 9th May on wards
The PPTA have indicated that there will be a rolling strikes for different year groups at a time from the above date. This will affect year groups on different days and certain events like Inter-schools. The interschool with Waitaki Boys High School has already been cancelled for Wednesday 10th May.
Country Visits - New potential enrollments
We will be out in the community in Week 2 of Term 2 from Monday 1st May through to Wednesday 3rd May. We have had really good interest across the community for pre-enrollments for 2024, 2025, and also 2026. We will be in the area on these dates below. Please pass on to any families who might be interested. There is also a link below for them to complete.

Wednesday May 24th - Year 9 Rugby Match vs TBHS
This is for all our Year 9 Parents to add to their diaries. We have planned a rugby match between our School House and Timaru Boys High School hostel - Thomas House. This will between the year 9 boys only. Our boys will also be coached by our Year 13 hostel boys and every boy will be given an opportunity to participate in the team. It will be rolling substitutions and no pushing in the scrums for further safety. This in an event that we hope will continue to be an annual event between the two hostels. We will both be travelling to Oamaru for the game and being hosted by North Otago RFC and a local club. Thank you to RDO Jason Forest for helping with this organisation. More details to follow.
Formal Dinner
Great way to end last term with acknowledging some of our boys for some outstanding performances in academic, sport & culture, and especially citizenship. Well done to all our boys for Term 1. Thank you again to Hostel old boy, Justin Nixon for giving his time and wisdom to our boys.
Name clothing items and towels.
Please ensure all boys clothes items and towels are named as alot of washing is piling up due to no name on them. After a period of time some items maybe donated to charity.
Follow us on our social media platforms Instagram: @obhshostel and Facebook Otago Boys’ High School Hostel for information and activities our boys are doing.
