This year we have introduced the Student Volunteer Army Service Awards.
This is to recognise the large amount of work that our students do, both in and outside of school. With the 160th celebration, our target is to complete 10,000 hours of voluntary work this year.
Over the coming weeks we will profile students who are putting their hands up to help both the school and the community.
Javara Clark
To date Javara has undertaken 198 hours of community service.
Heavily involved in surf life saving, Javara has spent many hours as a volunteer at Brighton Surf Life Saving Club. He has helped run the patrol, along side mentoring less experienced members with radio and first aid training.
During this last season, Javara acted as a crewman and marshal at Warrington beach for their junior interclub fixture.
He was responsible for running a surf life saving session for a large group of children, introducing them to a variety of skills and has applied for a SIS sport coaching qualification.
Javara has been involved in working bees, sports days and practical sessions with Surf Life Saving and was recently a lifeguard for the Year 13 triathlon internal assessment.
Just this month, as a member of the OBHS/OGHS Chorale group, he participated in the RSA Choir's ANZAC Revue held at Knox Church.
Jack Thom
Jack has completed 217 hours of volunteer service.
This has involved him acting as a guide at the 2022 OBHS Open Night.
He has also spent many hours volunteering his time for the Waikouaiti District Museum Society, assisting their fundraising efforts by processing and delivering firewood. Jack was actively involved in the organisation and running of the Blueskin A&P Show, and has attended meetings and working bees for the Merton Cemetery committee.
This year, Jack spent a week as a helper at a Year 10 camp at the Mt Aspiring school lodge in the Matukituki Valley.
