Big Sing

This week, our choirs returned to the town hall for the 2023 Big Sing choral competition.

We had 20 boys perform in the boys choir, 'Mandate', and nine of those also performed in the combined OBHS/OGHS choir, 'Fortress'.

The boys have worked well this year and managed to get through plenty of repertoire. For the competition, each choir sings three pieces in three categories: New Zealand Composition, Choral Art Music, and Contemporary. The combined choir picked up a commendation in the New Zealand Composition category.

In the next couple of weeks we will find out which choirs will go to the national finale in Auckland or the South Island Cadenza competition in Timaru. It would be great to send off our three Year 13s, Teddy Finney-Waters, Cheol Shin, and Daniel Jeong with a few more great performances this year.

The Big Sing is a big commitment in itself, but many of the boys in the choir are also involved in the production, which starts next week. Hopefully, plenty of friends and family will be supporting the boys in their choir performances and production, and hopefully, their teachers will be kind when they finally return to class.
