As a school we welcomed the end to rostering home and the shift to an arbitration process.
Teaching is an important role in society. We are challenged every day to be energised and committed to the students in our care. Having students not here goes against that grain.
I only hope that there is a positive solution reached over the next week or during the term break, and we thank our parents for their understanding. We know it has been difficult and please be assured we are doing all that we can to make sure the impact on learning and on opportunity is minimised. To this end, the key determinant of success in the classroom is being in the classroom. Attendance on a daily basis matters, and while we accept the rostering home has not helped, it is still the best way to get academic and social progress.
My congratulations to all staff and students of both Otago Girls' and Otago Boys' for their excellent production of Magic City. This show, created and fashioned by teachers, has given a wide range of young people the opportunity to do something different. The time, the passion and the execution are all first class, and if you have not seen it, or you have not been to a show in a while, I thoroughly recommend you take the opportunity tonight or tomorrow to see it. A two hour break from a screen is another bonus too.
One more week to go on what has been a very busy term.
