Blood donation

By Rob Wither | Posted: Wednesday July 19, 2023

Our annual blood donation day has arrived for our Year 13 students.

Kia ora koutou to all Year 13 students, parents and caregivers.

When: Tuesday, 1 August

In the morning at two times, 9.10am and 10.05am, with a free bus supplied to and from NZ Blood Service.

Facts around blood donation

  • Every day 83 New Zealander’s will need lifesaving blood or plasma.
  • Every 18 minutes someone in New Zealand needs blood or plasma.
  • Blood only lasts 35 days.
  • O+ and A+ are the two most common blood types in NZ, so there is always demand for those types. Once you donate you will find out what your blood type is.
  • One blood donation can save up to three lives.

What you need to know if you are interested as a student or a parent and/or caregiver of an interested student:

  • 16 and over (Year 13), plus certain criteria, to donate blood with ID. Please see sheet attached below for further details.
  • We need 14 student volunteers plus some reserves (to cater for a potential contingency such as illness, eligibility issues and unavailability).
  • All students that volunteer regardless of being in a position to donate or not will be recognised by the school.
  • Where to sign up: sign up sheet, further details about eligibility and logistics for the 1st of August is at Mr Wither's (Guidance Counsellors office located in the "castle" far side in the far right blue door beside his office door) or alternatively you can contact me via my email: [email protected]
  • Buses arranged from OBHS (two times 9.10am and 10.05am). If you sign up to donate blood, please be five minutes early, with your ID, meeting outside main entrance door to the foyer of the castle. Please excuse yourself from class, note your teachers are aware of the blood donation day.
  • Finally, notification to parents and caregivers, should your child wish to donate blood, we will be sharing your contact details with the NZ blood service. This is done for health and safety reasons in order to support your child's safe blood donation on the day, should they need to go home to rest etc., just as a contingency.

Here is the NZ school blood donors video link that will be shown to students at senior assembly next week for students.
