During the holidays, three of our Year 13 students, Matt Begg, James Hulyer, and Oliver Hobbs, had the incredible opportunity to attend the mid-year workshop organised by Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury (UC) as part of their MATH199 course they have been completing by distance this year.
This workshop is a truly great experience for those who have a deep passion for mathematics, statistics, and engineering. This year, more than 300 students from all over the country were enrolled in this course.
The workshop offers an abundance of knowledge, covering topics such as differential equations, space imaging, and piano-playing robot designs. However, the most valuable aspect is the opportunity to establish connections with like-minded people from around the country. Oliver said, "We stayed at Acland House, a boarding house for Christchurch Girls' High School. This gave the whole workshop a more personal feel, as we were all staying at the same location for three days. This meant that we also got to meet a lot of like-minded people and hang out with them for 3 days while learning new maths."
James mentioned that one of the highlights was the tour of the engineering facility. He shared, "When we first arrived at the University of Canterbury, we were taken for a tour of the engineering school. We got to see all the labs, workshops, and areas used for research and development." Matt added, "It was great."
This year, the workshop featured multiple guest speakers, including The Executive Dean of Engineering at the University of Canterbury, all speaking on the importance of engineering and its application in society today.
Congratulations to our students who participated in this workshop. Your dedication and passion for mathematics, statistics, and engineering are truly commendable. Keep up the great work!
