The OBHS orienteering squad are collaborating with the Dunedin Orienteering Club to run a public event across the school grounds and nearby Town Belt area on Sunday, 3 September.
It is a "Sprint" event, with one easier "Yellow" and one harder "Orange" course, plus a Memory course where you don't get a map but have to memorise a section of the course at a time.
It would be a good event to turn up to if you've never tried city orienteering before. Complete beginners and families with young kids most welcome. There will be OBHS students there to give you some tips on what to do.
No dogs with you, though, sorry, as per normal school rules.
Start times are anytime between 11am-12pm. Courses should only take up to half an hour each, depending on how fast you move or how lost you get.
The event centre will be up on Littlebourne ground at the Moana Pool end of the Rose Walk, on Queens Drive, by the ambulance gate. Parking isn't recommended at that end of Queens Drive, so anyone driving should probably park on Arthur St. You can then walk along Arthur St towards Stuart St, around the Rector's residence driveway entrance, up behind the Stuart St bus shelter, up to Queens Drive, to get to the start area. Please avoid walking through the school to get there as the course will already be laid out. Alternatively, you could park near Moana Pool and walk across Stuart St. Or you could walk, bike, or run there for a warm up and not worry about parking at all.
The cost to do a course for a student under 20 years old is $10, or $5 for those who are already club members. Plus $3 to hire the piece of electronic timing equipment that records your course as you do it. Two friends having a go at a course would register as a pair and only pay for 1 map. As long as there are spare maps, you can usually have a go at a 2nd harder course for no extra cost.
