Congratulations to all the participants in the OMAthalon this year.
This year we entered 4 Year 9 teams, 4 Year 10 teams, and 2 senior teams.
Both the senior event on 17th August, and the junior event on 24th August were fantastic opportunities for the boys to have some fun and engage with mathematics in a way that's a bit different to normal.
The seniors performed very well. The veteran team of Oliver Hobbs, James Hulyer and Connor Purvis joined by new addition to the team Ashhal Shahzad finished 4th overall, a small improvement on placing 5th in 2022. Just behind them were the Year 11's: Liam Elder, Jack Usher, Hamish Grindlay and Joseph Chen who came in 5th. This was a sit down ‘Pub Quiz’ style event with 7 rounds, including a list and a ponderous puzzle.
A very hearty congratulations goes to the Year 9’s who came into the competition with the expectation of recent OMAthalon successes weighing heavily on their shoulders. The team of Sam Goodchild, Henry Hodgson, George Garden and Flynn Richards rose to the challenge however and in a very dramatic 3-way tie, they were victorious in a 1 question tiebreaker to take 1st place.
The other 3 teams made up of Leo Garden, Archie Davison, Lawrence Bielski-Cooke, Chris McArthur, Mathew Campbell, Brody Turner, Riley Horne, Maddix Smith, Tanveer Singh and Oliver Morgan performed admirably.
The Year 10's also performed very well with Oliver Devereux, Lochie Ing-Aram, Joseph Uehara and Zakariya Rizwan coming in 4th overall. They were ably supported by 3 other teams made up of: Josh Geddes, Caleb Wayne, Jayden Lu, Kase Robertson, Wilson Li, Max McCaul, Sunny Jiang, Conor McIntyre, Robbie Nichol and Noah Wilson.
Thank you very much to everyone involved, students for making the event what it is, parents for getting everyone there and back at all hours, and staff for helping out with marking and photos on the night.
