The junior OBHS 1 team took out the Dunedin Schools' Debating competition in Wednesday night's finals.
The team initially met OBHS 2 in the semi finals of the three term competition, affirming the motion 'This house regrets recreational pet ownership'. OBHS 2 fought a good fight, but were not too unhappy to see their opposition proceed to the final.
The negative side was definitely the side to be on for the final, with the motion 'This house believes that NZ should become a state of Australia'. Sam, Will, and Joshua were impassioned in their argument to maintain our culture and the black jersey of our sporting teams, and they firmly dealt with the arguments put forward by Columba College on the affirmative side. After a significant commitment from the teams in preparing for the finals with many lunch times and after school sessions spent honing their craft, the result is one the boys can all feel very proud of.
A special mention to Rohan O'Shea who, together with Cheol Shin, volunteered their time to train our three junior teams. In a single year they've not only established the school as a competitive presence in the local comp, but have also created a legacy of future participation and (hopefully) success in senior competitions and interschools.
