Riding the waves to success

During the holidays the Owen brothers, Jake and Alexis, competed at the 2023 Scholastics Surfing Championships held in Gisborne.

As members of the Otago/Southland team, they represented themselves and their team well with spectacular performances.

Making his way through to the Under 18 semi-final, Jake started well with a solid 6.83 for a right hander. Even with one of the best turns of the heats, he was gradually pushed back to 3rd place giving him a final placing of 5th overall. A great effort!

Competing in the Under 16 division, Alexis made an easy job of making it through to the finals, trusting his lethal backhand he came away with a solid 15 point total. Alexis continued his domination throughout the heats leaving no question in the judges minds as to who the Under 16 National Scholastics Champion was.

Overall, the Otago team exceeded expectations, blowing last year's results out of the water and finishing in 4th place, cementing themselves in the top 4 of New Zealand’s high schools surfing meccas.
