As the curtain falls on the seniors of 2023, the seniors of 2024 are emerging as they prepare for their chance to leave their legacy in the history books of OBHS.
On Tuesday afternoon over 40 Year 12 students volunteered to attend a leadership workshop after school. The purpose of the workshop was to bring next year’s seniors together to start their formation as a group of leaders for our great school.
It was inspiring to see the courage that these young men have shown to put themselves out there for the betterment of their 'brothers in the hoops'. It was clear from the outset that this group of leaders are focused on ‘everyday leadership’ that starts with the small, unseen, and relational acts that no-one is going to praise them for, but potentially will have the greatest impact on the younger students at our school.
Within the session, these young leaders made it clear that they wish to lead an inclusive, proud and passionate brotherhood.
As an example of their values driven thinking, the following are their responses when asked what they wanted the Year 9s of 2024 to feel and know after their first days at OBHS:
- Part of a Brotherhood
- Proud to be part of the Hoops
- Part of something bigger than the individual
- Welcomed
- Respected
- Accepted
- Included
- Safe
- Feel at home
- Respect the seniors – we’ve given them someone to look up to and go to for help
- Respect the school's history and culture
The level of engagement, maturity, and enthusiasm in the group was fantastic. The challenge will now be for this group to maintain the momentum they’ve started as they prepare for 2024. The next opportunity for leadership formation will be the leadership camp happening in the last week of school. A reminder that Year 12s wishing to be involved in this need to return their forms to the student office by the end of next week. I look forward to working with this fine group of men again.
