Senior prizegiving

Senior prizegiving was held on Tuesday, 31 October at the Regent Theatre. It was a special occasion to celebrate the student's success throughout the year.

Matthew Bolter - Dux

Matthew is highly motivated to excel in everything he pursues. He is a three-time Centurion, having earned Academic Blues for each of the three NCEA year levels. He achieved Level 1 and 2 Excellence endorsements as a Year 11 student and Level 3 Endorsed with Excellence in Year 12. Along with sporting Blues in athletics, cross country, and debating.

In the current year, Matthew secured the first position in Business and English, and the second in Physics and received a commendation in Chemistry. As a Year 12 student, he also achieved first place in Level 3 Geography and received commendations for Level 3 Calculus, History, Physics, and Statistics. Currently, he holds endorsements with Excellence in 12 subjects, not including his 2023 subjects. In total, Matthew has accumulated 312 Excellence credits.

In 2022, Matthew was awarded Scholarships in Statistics and Geography, along with an Outstanding Scholarship in History. This year, he undertook a University of Canterbury UC philosophy course in Ethics, Politics, and Justice, earning an A grade. Matthew embodies true academic excellence in every sense.

Looking forward, Matthew is set to join Otago University next year to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in History, Politics, and Economics. Supported by his recently awarded University of Otago Academic Excellence Scholarship.

Congratulations Matthew, I know this has been a goal of yours for some time and your achievements have not come without a great deal of hard work and determination. Well done.

Bodhi Keiller - Proxime Accessit to Dux

This 2023 school prefect has demonstrated exceptional dedication in the pursuit of excellence across a range of areas during his five years at Otago Boys' High School. He has represented the school in cricket and volleyball, earning sporting Blues for both of these sports. As a member of the Accelerated Learning programme, he successfully studied and achieved excellence endorsements in NCEA Level 3 Geography and History while in Year 12. In 2022, Bodhi was awarded the Otago High Schools Board Scholarship, which he utilised this year to finance the study of two courses through the University of Canterbury. He received a B+ for "Writing for Academic Success" and is on track for an A in his current Philosophy course.

Bodhi has received an Academic Blue for both Levels One and Two and is a three-time Centurion. He has earned multiple NCEA subject commendations over the past four years, amassing a total of 189 excellence credits, including 100% excellence for his internals this year.

Bodhi's future plans include attending Otago University to pursue his studies in Law and the Arts. His consistent commitment to excellence has truly set him apart as a standout student at Otago Boys' High School, with a promising future ahead. Well done, Bodhi.

Fergus Oberlin-Brown - 2024 Head Boy

Fergus is acknowledged by his peers and the teaching staff for his leadership qualities and admirable disposition.

Always cheerful and willing to offer a helping hand, Fergus will be a respected leader for the 2024 school year. He is an all-rounder who gives 100% commitment to what he does. An Excellence endorsed centurion at both levels 1 and 2, Fergus balances his high academic achievement with his commitments to tennis, 1st XI hockey and cross country. He has been awarded Blues this year in all three sports. 

Fergus will be a fine leader of our school.

Freddie Hore - 2024 Deputy Head Boy 

Freddie is an outstanding student. His diligent work ethic and consistent efforts have paid off as he received his Excellence endorsed Level One certificate and is well on track to do so again for Level Two. Freddie is also undertaking both scholarship and Level Three Geography. A centurion, he is also involved in hockey and curling, receiving a Blue this year for the latter. A respectful and conscientious young man, we look forward to watching Freddie complement his current achievements by serving as Deputy Head Boy next year.

Archie Chittock - 2024 Head Boy of School House 

A competent academic, Archie achieved his Level One certificate endorsed with Merit and is on track to do so again at Level Two. 

Archie accompanies his academic pursuits with a well rounded extracurricular schedule, including rugby and rowing for which he received a sporting Blue this year. Archie is being recognised by his peers as a valuable leader and role model. Archie Chittock will serve well as the Head of Hostel in 2024.

Teddy Finney-Waters - Alexander Wilson Memorial for Best All-Round Boy 2023

An outstanding young man, Teddy has involved himself in all areas of school life. 

He is a prefect, taking a lead in the arts at OBHS. This year he organised an arts and cultural concert to round off Term 3. Teddy has been a member of both the OBHS choir, Mandate, and the combined OGHS/OBHS choir since Year 9. He has also sung with the NZ Secondary Schools choir since he was in Year 10 and this year was one of the choir leaders. Teddy’s love for singing and performance has seen him perform in our school productions since he was in Year 9. In 2023, he had the lead role in “The Magic City". Teddy has also sung with Opera Otago. 

Additionally, he is a talented pianist. A top academic, Teddy achieved NCEA Levels 1 and 2 endorsed with Excellence and he has already achieved an Excellence Endorsement for Level 3. He has gained prizes this evening for his academic achievement and has been awarded a University of Otago Academic Excellence Scholarship. 

In addition to his artistic and academic pursuits, Teddy has found time to play football for the 4th XI and cricket for the senior golds. Always cheerful and enthusiastic, Teddy is thoroughly deserving of this award.
