With the ‘NEW’ Level 1 NCEA course planning in full swing around the country, Otago Boys’ High School Commerce department took the opportunity to drop into recently crowned Business South Supreme Business Excellence Award winner - ADInstruments (ADI) during its professional development day this week.

It was great to catch-up with old boy Greg Chiles who is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) at ADI to hear about the operational side of the successful tech business.

In 2024, Level 1 Commerce is a ‘NEW’ subject option for students – with the previously taught accounting, economics and business studies subjects being combined into a ‘NEW’ Commerce course which is being rolled out around the country for the first time in 2024. One of the new focusses of the revamped NCEA Level 1 Commerce qualification is a focus on local businesses.

At the recent Business South Awards 2023, ADInstruments won the excellence in science, technology, and innovation award before going on to be named supreme winner. The Dunedin-based company creates simple, flexible tools to help scientists and educators record and analyse data quickly and efficiently around the world.

Boasting more than 35 years of experience in life science, and having worked with more than 10,000 organisations worldwide, the company was described at the recent awards as a stand-out entrant.

Founded in 1986 by Michael Macknight, the company now has offices in 15 countries and is ranked 62nd among technology companies in New Zealand.

A team of nearly 200 based in its Dunedin headquarters in Vogel St drive the tech development. ADI’s products have been featured in more than 43,000 research papers in peer-reviewed journals and it has partnered with such institutions as Roche, Toyota, Mayo Clinic and Harvard.

Special thanks to old boy Greg Chiles and the team at ADInstruments for hosting the OBHS Commerce team.
